How the LFX Mentorship Program Helped me Start My Career - Navendu Pottekkat, API7.ai [Presented in English]
In 2020, I made my first open source contribution. It was very rewarding that I started to spend more time contributing to open source. I was just starting to program full-time and I had a lot to learn. That is when I was accepted into the Linux Foundation Mentorship Program. It gave me access to mentors and helped me improve my coding skills. It also helped me to work on open source while getting a stable stipend. This journey led me to full-time roles writing open source code. Today, I help pay it forward by being a mentor through the same program. In this talk, I walk through how this program has been beneficial to me and others who come from similar backgrounds that offer very less opportunities. I will also share my journey that led to working in open source full-time with very global and diverse teams. A Guardian Angel of File Systems: Monitoring for File System Errors in Data Centers - Gabriel Krisman Bertazi, Collabora [Presented in English]
A fact of life, one that almost every computer user has to face at some point, is that file systems fail. Whether it is due a faulty hardware, a sudden power loss, or a kernel bug, users don't enjoy losing their data for no reason.

When it happens on a user-facing machine, the problem is usually found and troubleshooted by inspecting the kernel log. The user, after some grumpiness, can then start a recovery process, like fsck, replace the disk, or restore from backup. But this kind of simple monitoring simply doesn't scale to a data-center. When dealing with a fleet of machines, kernel logs are lost, printk messages change or get truncated, and, more often than not, system administrators are left without any warning until it is too late.

In this talk, I will present a new kernel mechanism for daemons to monitor file system health through a series of push notification events from the kernel, which are triggered as soon as a volume corruption is found by the file system code. This feature, merged in Linux 5.16, once picked up by distros, won't prevent errors from happening, but will allow system administrators to reliably watch their volumes, and act immediately when necessary.

Designing Secure Containerized Applications for Embedded Linux Devices - Sergio Prado, Embedded Labworks [Presented in English]
It's becoming more and more common to take the container approach to develop and deploy applications on embedded Linux devices. But there is always this tension between completely isolating the containerized application from the host operating system and sharing resources with the host OS so that the application can do its job. Namespaces, bind mounts, cgroups, capabilities, seccomp, AppArmor, SELinux, etc. Several technologies are available to isolate and secure applications running inside containers, but it's not that easy to identify the best approach to adopt for a specific situation. This presentation will be a walkthrough of the main technologies to secure containerized applications on embedded Linux devices, providing the audience a good understanding of the trade-offs between those technologies and how they can be leveraged in real-world products.

Applying Machine Learning Techniques to Detect and Understand Fake News - João Lucas Vale Assis, SUSE [Presented in English]
In a world increasingly connected, speed is prioritized over truth, in a way that information have a considerable power of reaching many people in a few time, and the truth of such information is questioned and, maybe proven, after a long period of digital dissemination. In such way, disinformation can be disastrous for society in general and valuable for those who benefit from it. With so much data, could it be possible to have machine learning algorithms helping us detect information that have a high chance of being false? Could this process be accomplished in a ethical way? In this presentation João Lucas will discuss such questions, and present the results of applying the Passive Aggressive algorithm to create models that classify as true and fake Brazilian news. Moreover, he will talk about the patterns that he found in those news, using knowledge extraction techniques (i.e. t-SNE), and how those patterns helps to identify features that could be relevant to build even more precise models.

How Geo-Distributed Apps Use Global Cloud Infra for Speed and Compliance - Denis Magda, Yugabyte [Presented in English]
An infrastructure of major cloud providers spans dozens of geographical regions and availability zones. With this infrastructure, any application can serve user requests with low latency regardless of whereabouts, bringing the application experience straight to users’ doors. It can also easily comply with data residency requirements when expanding to new territories. Come and learn how to design geo-distributed applications that achieve low latency and comply with GDPR regulations (and similar) by: 1) Spreading data across multiple availability zones, regions, and even cloud providers. 2) Serving user requests with microservices closest to the user location. 3) Using a combination of synch and async communication channels to replicate data and exchange events between cloud regions of different proximity.

WebRTC: Connecting Embedded, Mobile and Desktop with the Lowest Latencies - Olivier Crête, Collabora [Presented in English]
WebRTC is a group of open standards implemented by the major browsers for low-latency p2p communications. It was originally designed to enable video calls directly from browsers, but has been designed to be flexible so that it can be used to enable a variety of use-cases. In particular, it can enable low latency video transfer from embedded and IoT devices. WebRTC also has a data channel system low latency messages to be exchanged between the device and browser based apps.

All three major browsers (Chromium, Firefox & Safari) use Google's WebRTC implementation, and it can also be used stand-alone in embedded systems. But it is quite monolithic and often is not ideal for embedded use. There are other implementations, such as GStreamer's implementation of the WebRTC protocols, that can often be better suited, in particular when it comes to leveraging hardware capabilities and controlling the system size.

In this presentation, we will give a brief introduction to WebRTC and its constituent protocols. Drawing on our experience building real embedded devices, we will then focus on the embedded and IoT use-cases to explain how WebRTC can be used to add interesting audio, video and control features. We will conclude with tricks and recommendations on succesful embedded WebRTC usage.

Why Kubernetes Applications Require a New Approach to Testing using Testkube - Bruno Leonel André Lopes, Kubeshop.io [Presented in English]
Microservices, CI/CD, DevOps, GitOps, cluster networking, etc… — more and more teams are building software fundamentally differently than they did even a few years ago. However, testing approaches and tooling have not caught up yet. At least not until now. What if you could apply the same type of GitOps and DevOps methodologies to your testing activities ? Tests could be deployed and stored in a Kubernetes cluster, they could decoupled from your CI/CD, orchestrated in the cluster in the same way you do with your applications and not in your CI/CD, publish results aggregated in a common format and triggered with a simple API request. Looks promising right ? Let’s have a look at TestKube, an open-source framework that is moving to be the cloud-native testing framework for all your Tests in Kubernetes. Whether you are using Postman, Cypress, K6, SoapUI, or any other testing tool, TestKube can unlock all the capabilities of those tools that allow you to deliver code with confidence.

How Testability Drives Observability - Matheus Henrique Pereira Nogueira de Paula, Kubeshop [Presented in English]
So you have OpenTelemetry tracing working, but how good is the data contained in the traces? Have you ever had a production issue, looked at the trace and thought “I still can’t tell what is going on!”. We need QA for our Traces… or at least a process that drives them to improve over time.

Trace-based testing is a technique that is becoming popular to test systems at an integration or end-to-end level by applying assertions against the data contained in an OpenTelemetry (OTel) trace. Trace-based testing provides much deeper testing than traditional black box testing because it takes advantage of the richness of the information contained in the trace. We will demonstrate via a live coding exercise that utilizing trace-based testing not only allows you to quickly increase test coverage, but the practice results in improved traceability.

MLSecOps with Automated Online and Offline ML Model Evaluations on Kubernetes - Tommy Li & Animesh Singh, IBM [Presented in English]
MLSecOps is the intersection of machine learning, DevOps, infrastructure, and security. Machine Learning models can be easily reversed, leading to invaluable loss of Data. Having a robust MLSecOps infrastructure in place is absolutely necessary. It's incredibly complex for data scientists to monitor model security since it is hard to access and process model payloads on Kubernetes in scale. Therefore, it’s crucial to automate online real-time evaluations and detailed offline analysis on Kubernetes. Real-time evaluations such as model explanations can provide immediate feedback for each model prediction, while offline analysis such as fairness and adversarial detection can examine the model security over a period of time in order to visualize and report any potential threats in the model. This talk covers how to use KServe, Knative, Apache Kafka, and Trusted-AI tools to serve ML models, persist payloads, and automate both online and offline model evaluations in a production environment.

A Different Kind of S3: First Line Security of the Supply Chain - John Amaral, Slim.AI [Presented in English]
This past year we learned the hard way that your software supply chain is only as secure as its weakest link - from Solarwinds, to CodeCov and Log4j. Your third-party and open source packages and imports are only one zero-day exploit away from compromising your entire production operation.

In this talk we’ll focus on three core areas to securing the supply chain, through an easy mnemonic we call the three S’s - Software Bill of Materials (SBOM), Signing and Slimming. By first identifying your inventory and know what you need to secure, you can then verify your packages and build an immutable identity, and ultimately by slimming you minimize the attack surface. We’ll walk through the practical ways to apply these methods to your software supply chain as first line security controls.

How to Grow and Mentor an Open Source Community & Achieve Collaboration with Over 170 Listed Corporations - Juan Pan, SphereEx [Presented in English]
As the CTO and Co-Founder of an open source SaaS commercial start-up that has received seed funding from some of the world's top VCs, Juan Pan's light speed, and empowering entrepreneurial journey started just half a year ago – when open source enthusiast, Apache member, distributed database developer, and DBA were the hats she was wearing. Having gone from being a woman developer in the open source world to CTO, didn’t simply mean a change in her title. This journey included growing an open source community from just a handful of contributors, to one of the leading communities in China and fastest growing Apache projects in the world. The secret? True openness and inclusiveness, the willingness to both mentor students by collaborating with initiatives such as Google Summer of Code or Anita B. Org’s Grace Hopper Celebration, while fostering a technically sound community whose solution has been adopted by over 170 corporations listed on the stock exchange. In this talk she will share her empowering journey and valuable experience of being the CTO at an open source commercial start-up, how women in tech can take the challenges they face and turn them into opportunities, and best practices for open source project leadership.

Real-Time Analytics: Going Beyond Stream Processing with Apache Pinot - Karin Wolok & Mark Needham, StarTree [Presented in English]
Apache Kafka forms the backbone of the modern data pipeline and its stream processing capabilities provide insights on events as they arrive. But what if we want to go further than this and execute analytical queries on this real-time data. The OLAP databases used for analytical workloads traditionally executed queries on yesterday's data with query latency in the 10s of seconds. The emergence of real-time analytics has changed all this and the expectation is that we should now be able to run thousand of queries per second on fresh data with query latencies typically seen on OLTP databases. This is where Apache Pinot comes into the picture. Apache Pinot is a realtime distributed OLAP datastore, which is used to deliver scalable real time analytics with low latency. It can ingest data from streaming sources like Kafka, as well as from batch data sources (S3, HDFS, Azure Data Lake, Google Cloud Storage), and provides a layer of indexing techniques that can be used to maximise the performance of queries. Come to this talk to learn how you can add real-time analytics capability to your data pipeline.

Dev Team Metrics that Matter - Avishag Sahar, LinearB [Presented in English]
What is the most valuable outcome? This is the most important question to answer before starting an engineering metrics program. In this talk I discuss which dev team metrics matter most, the outcome they produce, and pitfalls to avoid when starting a metrics initiative. The truth is, no one really likes being measured, especially devs. But business leaders like looking at numbers, so they grab what’s easily available - # of code changes, agile velocity, individual dev metrics. These types of metrics are unbalanced, exclude context, and hurt engineering culture as a whole. What you measure is what your team will produce. If you start measuring the number of code changes as a key performance metric, you are going to see coding time, PR size, and Cycle Time all increase. Don’t fall into this trap. In this session I discuss which team level metrics are most significant, the outcomes they produce, and strategies that will help you avoid the mistakes I’ve already made.

What We Learned Dissecting the World’s Most Popular Containers - Ayse Kaya, Slim.AI [Presented in English]
Data scientist and container enthusiast Ayse Kaya and her team at Slim.AI analyzed more than 100 of the world’s most popular public container images using open source tools to better understand what developers encounter when running containers in Kubernetes. What they found was a vast, varied, and complex world that gives developers massive opportunities to scale, but also presents risks to both security and productivity. This talk shares the data, visualizations, and insights they generated from their research. Kaya shows the current paradox in software supply chain practices (i.e. taking advantage of abstraction vs. knowing what’s in the software you ship), and that even small, special purpose containers could have thousands of packages, libraries, and licenses, not to mention critical vulnerabilities. Finally, she’ll highlight the current trade-offs teams make between “developer experience” and “production readiness”, and open a discussion about how we can improve as an industry.

WebAssembly Based AI as a Service - Rishit Dagli, Narayana Junior College; Incoming University of Toronto & Shivay Lamba, Meilisearch [Presented in English]
WebAssembly (WASM) is being adopted in cloud-native applications, there are increasing demands to support scripting-language applications and libraries in WASM. That allows WASM runtimes, such as WasmEdge (a lightweight and high-performance runtime for cloud-native, edge, and decentralized devices), to run serverless functions written in scripting languages and APIs. Following the large-scale adoption and benefits of serverless computing, we focus on deploying these as a Function-as-a-service Machine Learning inference is often a computationally intensive task and edge applications could greatly benefit from the speed of WebAssembly. Unfortunately, Linux containers end up being too heavy for such tasks. Demonstrating Machine Learning deployments in such a fashion, another problem we face is that the standard WebAssembly provides very limited access to the native OS and hardware, such as multi-core CPUs, GPUs, or TPUs which is not ideal for the systems we target. The talk also shows how one could use the WebAssembly System Interface (WASI) to get security, portability, and native speed for ML models. To top it off this talk ends with a demo of deploying a Machine learning model as a serverless function using WASM.

Unravelling How Firmware Interacts with the Linux Subsystem - Smitha T Murthy, Samsung Semiconductor India Research [Presented in English]
How you ever wondered how you are able to load device driver firmware onto the device microcontrollers or microcode for CPU errate or even get device driver information on calibration data, EEPROM overrides etc? All these are possible due to firmware API provided in Linux which enables the kernel to request files for necessary functionality from userspace. Also with the increased SoC complexity, firmware system has become extremely important. In this talk we are going to delve into request_firmware APIs for both synchronous and asynchronous requests, chosen based on our requirement. We will be understanding firmware API core features of how firmware cache works and its importance in suspend/resume functionality. We will look into search paths that are used to look for firmware on the root filesystem using direct filesystem lookup or having an option of building the firmware into the kernel itself. We will be understanding everything about the firmware fallback mechanism. We will get to know different types of fallback mechanisms, custom fallback mechanism that can be added, timeout notifications, sysfs loading facility and much more in depth. In the end, we will be using MFC device driver which needs firmware for its operation to see how these APIs function in real-time.

Training AI To Code Using The Largest Code Dataset (Project CodeNet) - Christian Kadner & Tommy Li, IBM [Presented in English]
Project CodeNet is a large dataset of 14 million code samples totaling 500 million lines of code in 55 programming languages. It enables machine learning for code, like finding code similarity, extracting semantic context, and even translating between different programming languages. Using the Machine Learning Exchange (MLX), a Linux Foundation for AI & Data Sandbox Project, we demonstrate how Project CodeNet can be leveraged to classify code and analyze code complexity in three steps. Using DataShim we turn domain specific subsets of the data into Kubernetes Custom Resources. Running Jupyter notebooks on Kubernetes we use the datasets to train deep learning models. The models are then containerized and served for inferencing on Kubernetes. For each of these steps, MLX generates Kubeflow Pipelines on Tekton so data scientists are not required to write Kubernetes specific code. Using the curated datasets, example notebooks and pre-trained models, teams of data scientists can utilize the Machine Learning Exchange to bring machine learning and AI into the world of code.

From a Database in Container to DBaaS on Kubernetes - Peter Zaitsev, Percona [Presented in English]
DBaaS is the fastest growing way to deploy databases. It is fast and convenient and it helps to reduce toil a lot, yet it is typically done using proprietary software and tightly coupled to the cloud vendor. We believe Kubernetes finally allows us to build fully OpenSource DBaaS Solution capable to be deployed anywhere Kubernetes runs - on the Public Cloud or in your private data center. In this presentation, we will talk about all important steps that it takes to run the database on Kubernetes in production. We will answer the questions: Can you do it without operators? Can you work with k8s primitives only to run production-grade DB and then DBaaS? We will describe the most important user requirements and typical problems you would encounter building DBaaS Solution and explain how you can solve them using Kubernetes Operator framework.

Federated Machine Learning with Kubernetes - Rishit Dagli, Narayana Junior College; Incoming University of Toronto & Shivay Lamba, Meilisearch [Presented in English]
Running ML models on edge devices have become more popular than ever but with ML on edge come the two problems of improving the model over time and doing so while keeping data privacy in mind. What if you could train an algorithm across multiple edge devices or servers with all of them keeping their data locally and preventing any data exchange? Enter, Federated Machine Learning and Kubernetes. This talk starts off by helping build clarity about ML and some other general computations on decentralized data. We also want to show why we often do not employ the same approaches, architectures, and data management when working with such data and models. What if you could support all the new aspects we introduce here while getting the benefits of Kubernetes. In this talk, we show how one could run the aforementioned components with Kubernetes at scale. We plan to not only show how to train a TensorFlow model on Kubernetes in such a fashion but also show this for other kinds of computations. In the end, being demo lovers ourselves we show a demo of image classification in such a fashion with Kubernetes. The audience would be able to develop smarter models with lower latency, and less power consumption, all while ensuring privacy as well as doing so at scale with Kubernetes.

Building a Secure By-Design Pipeline with an Open Source Stack - Rotem Refael, ARMO [Presented in English]
CI/CD has become the core of all engineering organizations, particularly as engineering velocity increases, the number of services that are managed, deployed & updated constantly, & the diversity of 3rd-party applications our pipelines integrate with. That is why ensuring the security of our CI/CD pipeline is no longer “nice to have”, but a critical piece when delivering our software to production. In this talk we’d like to walk you through the process of building an end-to-end secure pipeline, and the gotchas to look out for when it comes to pipeline security - from misconfigurations in IaC & YAML, to overly permissive CPU limits, and even insecure tagging between dev & prod. We’ll take a deep dive on how we secure our code & configuration, the pipeline itself & its integrations (SBOM), our K8s deployments, and ensure that we have continuous visibility with the right monitoring controls in place. All this will be demoed as code with a tried & true open source stack––from VSCode to Helm for the code & config, to Jenkins & CircleCI for the pipelines, best practices for deployment security, and how to bake in good observability with Prometheus & Lens. We’ll wrap up with some recommended extensions to help secure our pipelines by design, without changing our deployment structure.

Deploying ML at Scale with Kubernetes and TFX - Rishit Dagli, Narayana Junior College; Incoming University of Toronto [Presented in English]
There has been increasing popularity in the area of ML however deploying ML models at scale and being able to efficiently and consistently manage: serving model, infrastructure management, model versions, canary deployments, batch predictions, model metadata, monitoring data drifts, model routing, and A/B testing is a difficult task. I may say doing these steps correctly is more difficult than training a model for which a lot of literature is available. Enter Kubernetes and TensorFlow Extended. This talk will start off by giving some more clarity about the ML deployment steps as well as introduce TensorFlow Extended, an open-source tool that integrates quite well with Kubernetes and makes the deployment process consistent and easy. I also plan to talk about two more ideas in this talk: using Istio for model routing and A/B testing as well as showing the audience how they could best use their offloading pre-processing to server with Kubernetes. This would be followed by a demo.

Tutorial: Introduction to the Native Cloud Ecosystem and KCNA Exam Preparation - Adrian Gonzalez Sanchez, Microsoft / OdiseIA / HEC Montréal [Presented in Spanish]
The CNCF's KCNA exam is an entry-level cloud native certification, intended to be the first step for developers and practitioners who currently work with cloud native technologies or whose professional goals require them to. However, the language barrier is very important for non-English speakers, and this has a direct impact on the diversity of the cloud native community.  This 101-level session in Spanish aims to democratize the access to cloud native and Kubernetes knowledge for the incredible Spanish-speaking community of developers and practitioners in the LATAM region. The main goal is to enable Spanish-speaking learners to organize their KCNA exam preparation process, and to access specific CNCF resources.  Join Adrian Gonzalez Sanchez to establish a foundational knowledge of the cloud native landscape, with a particular emphasis on Kubernetes. You’ll review the ecosystem of cloud native tools, projects, and participants and lay the groundwork for your initial certification, while getting familiar with the preparation necessary as you move on to advanced Kubernetes and cloud certifications.

GitOps your SaaS Apps with ArgoCD: The Answer to the Unmanaged SaaS Jungle - Eran Bibi, Firefly [Presented in English]
ArgoCD's GitOps is becoming the popular way to control, automate and manage cloud assets at scale through unified policies. However, the most popular SaaS tools and infrastructure extensions that we all know and love, still remain outside of our GitOps practices. The irony is, that these SaaS tools behave just like operational clouds in many cases powered by similar resources and objects, and they can actually benefit the most from ArgoCD's centralized policy in the same way Kubernetes and other cloud native infrastructure does. Security and state drift in your SaaS clouds is no less troubling than in your cloud ops. This talk will walk you through how you can deliver ArgoCD's same GitOps value applied to your cloud native resources––from Kubernetes through multi-cloud––to your entire SaaS tool chain from your monitoring tools and APMs, CDNs, security and IAM tools all the way through your SCM, and literally any other tools that integrate natively with your IaC. We'll take a deep dive through real code examples for how to sync your SaaS tooling configuration by managing them through your IaC of choice, and ultimately how to reconcile these with your git repositories - putting the "git" back into GitOps.

Revisit Multi-Reader Synchronizations for Scalable Applications - Jim Huang, BiiLabs & Shao-Tse Hung, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University [Presented in English]
Read-Copy-Update (RCU) is one of the most known lock-free synchronization mechanisms for a scalable multi-reader single-writer access to concurrent linked data structures. In this talk, we will revisit the existing mechanisms, such as RCU and hazard pointer, and take into account two main criteria of these architectures: the scalability of the performances, and the scalability of the memory consumption. Then, we move towards the mixing synchronization mechanism to allow concurrent write accesses to the structures. Such a hybrid mechanism will avoid the contention over the reference counter (RC). Attendee should benefit from this talk from the aspect of optimizing concurrency for Linux applications.

Tales at Scale: Analytics at 1000 QPS and Beyond - Gian Merlino, Imply [Presented in English]
How do you build and operate systems that can ingest millions of events per second, store petabytes of historical data, and run thousands of queries per second, all at subsecond response times? It’s not easy, but it has been accomplished using the right mix of compute-storage design, scatter/gather query engines, and cluster management. Gian Merlino, Apache Druid® committer and co-founder of Imply will share tales of scale, showing how high-performance systems for interactive data conversations with high concurrency and low latency combining stream and batch data are built and used today

4 Opens and the Open Infra Way - Kendall Nelson, The Open Infrastructure Foundation [Presented in English]
It all started with OpenStack, but it’s a much larger world now. The 4 Opens Methodology guides more open source projects every year. Hundreds, or even thousands, of people coming together from different technical backgrounds, different countries, different companies, different time zones to work on a single project together is an amazing feat packed with challenges. It’s hard to get everyone on a level playing field, but the Four Opens model for collaboration makes this partnership easier: Open Design, Open Community, Open Development, and Open Source. This talk will give the audience and overview of what the 4 Opens look like in practice and how they can make your open source project more successful.

Deep Dive Into Linux Kernel Livepatch - Aakarsh Jain, Samsung Semiconductor India R&D [Presented in English]
Linux machines running with important or critical workloads, do not want to get rebooted every three weeks or six months for each new kernel release. So keeping these machines safe and up-to-date with security fixes is a must, which is the motivation behind livepatch. Livepatch is the ability of a kernel to change the flow of code execution from a broken or vulnerable function to a fixed function during runtime. It is implemented by compiling the new fixed function into a kernel module and loading it into the system. Ftrace is then used to redirect calls from the old function to the new function in the kernel module. This talk will cover the structure and detailed explanation of kernel livepatch, kpatch and prerequisites needed for writing a livepatch and how it uses ftrace for redirection. Also will showcase a demo on how livepatch works using kpatch-build, need of ELF sections and the limitations of livepatch. At the end of the session, the audience will have a better understanding of kernel livepatching, the usage of kpatch-build, and how to write a livepatch that can fix a real bug.

Policy as [versioned] Code - Chris Nesbitt-Smith, UK Government | learnk8s [Presented in English]
Beyond just "don’t run everything as root" In this talk Chris will trace back the origins of how policies are often incepted, how it can get out of hand, be slow if not impossible to update and measure compliance, and often lead us to question of **is the policy helping or hindering**. From this talk you'll learn how to use a software development pattern and product ways of thinking towards how your organization can manage policy; achieve continual updates to policy allowing the risk mitigations to move as fast as the risk does, not get in the way and be easy to measure compliance.
