WebRTC is a group of open standards implemented by the major browsers for low-latency p2p communications. It was originally designed to enable video calls directly from browsers, but has been designed to be flexible so that it can be used to enable a variety of use-cases. In particular, it can enable low latency video transfer from embedded and IoT devices. WebRTC also has a data channel system low latency messages to be exchanged between the device and browser based apps.

All three major browsers (Chromium, Firefox & Safari) use Google's WebRTC implementation, and it can also be used stand-alone in embedded systems. But it is quite monolithic and often is not ideal for embedded use. There are other implementations, such as GStreamer's implementation of the WebRTC protocols, that can often be better suited, in particular when it comes to leveraging hardware capabilities and controlling the system size.

In this presentation, we will give a brief introduction to WebRTC and its constituent protocols. Drawing on our experience building real embedded devices, we will then focus on the embedded and IoT use-cases to explain how WebRTC can be used to add interesting audio, video and control features. We will conclude with tricks and recommendations on succesful embedded WebRTC usage.
